Rangers should follow new Jack deal by handing Andy Halliday contract extension

Rangers announced on Friday that midfielder Ryan Jack had signed a new contract until 2021, and the Glasgow giants’ next job must be to extend Andy Halliday’s deal at Ibrox.
What’s the word, then?
Well, it is certainly no surprise that the Scottish Premiership outfit have tied the 26-year-old for at least another year following his impressive displays in the middle of the park this season, including another brilliant showing in the goalless draw against Hibernian at Easter Road on Wednesday night.
The former Aberdeen man looks to be one of the first names on the team-sheet in the centre right now with other players like Ross McCrorie and Lassana Coulibaly struggling to find good performances on a consistent basis, and with Ovie Ejaria returning to Liverpool after cutting short his loan spell early.
While Jack deserves the new deal and all of the positive recognition that comes with it, he isn’t the only Rangers player that should be getting the warmth from his club.
Why should Halliday get a new contract?
Like Jack, the 27-year-old has been one of Rangers’ best and most consistent players under Steven Gerrard this season, and his versatility mean that he can play either in his preferred defensive midfield role, left midfield or even at left-back when required – something he has done on many occasions without putting a foot wrong.
Despite that fact, the Scot has just 18 months remaining on his contract at Ibrox, and there is little doubt among the Gers faithful that he deserves to stay for a longer period of time given his quality and his clear commitment to the cause.
Gerrard needs players like Halliday in his team if he wants to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title and make a splash in the Europa League, and it should be the a top priority for Mark Allen and Dave King.
